Corkscrews

Start with a spiral corkscrew, as you can twist into the cork slowly and have the flexibility to reposition the corkscrew if needed. If the cork is crumbling, try the Butler’s Theif Cork Extractor, which has two thin blades that slide on either side of the cork and hold it in place for a smooth removal.

If you experience a stubborn or broken cork, use a Professional Corkscrew with a spiral screw and handle; this allows you to twist deep into the cork and pull the cork in a vertical line without hitting the neck of the bottle. You could also try the Butler’s Thief Cork Extractor for extra grip on either side of the cork.

A corkscrew has a top handle which twists the screw into the cork, with two arms on either side which you push down to lift the cork. A wine key is often slimmer and also referred to as a waiter’s corkscrew. The spiral screw twists into the cork, and you place the metal fulcrum on the lip of the bottle as leverage to pull the cork out. Wine keys may also have small knives to remove any seals.

Most corkscrews have a bottle-opening feature, making them a versatile addition to any bar. Whether that’s in the top handle or as an additional arm, which is tucked into the corkscrew, a bit like a Swiss Army knife.

Most Proseccos, Champagnes or Sparkling Wines do not require a corkscrew, and you should not use one. Corks can be successfully removed by removing the foil and untwisting the wiring. Hold the cork tightly in one hand and the bottom of the bottle in the other; twist the bottle slowly until you feel the cork ease out. Alternatively, use a Champagne/Sparkling Wine Opener for the perfect pop every time.
